Overuse Injuries

An overuse injury is typically a long-term or chronic condition that develops gradually over time, rather than from a sudden, acute event. It results from repeated minor trauma or stress to muscles, joints, ligaments, or tendons, with examples including tendinopathy and stress fractures.

These injuries often arise when repetitive tasks are performed, whether at work, home, or during exercise, without allowing sufficient time for rest and recovery. This concept is linked to the training principle that the body adapts to the demands placed on it. However, if those demands exceed the body's capacity to recover, injuries may occur. This is particularly common when starting a new sport, hobby, or activity, or when increasing training intensity for an event.

Overuse injuries can go unnoticed for a while, and the symptoms will vary depending on the tissue or body part affected. Some common signs include:

  • Pain that subsides after warming up but returns later or after the activity
  • Pinching or sharp pain during specific movements
  • A persistent, dull ache
